The Mallard feeds on the insects, worms, gasteropods and vegetation that it gleans from the water. As it moves its head, it takes in water and uses pressure exerted by its tongue to filter out sand and stones and retain edible organisms. It has a small skull, with a long flat bill with laminar structures along its edges.
